U15 Nationals 2019, Day 4 Recap

The fourth day of the U15 Nationals was a decisive one for our boys and girls. The round robin came to an end and the semifinals will take place in Calgary with three BC teams representing.

On the boys’ National, only BC and Alberta stepped on the field this Friday, as the final game in the pool. The BC boys won by 2-0 and secured first place in the group. Now, they will face Alberta again Saturday morning, at 8:30 am, in the playoffs. Whoever wins, will face the winner between Quebec and Ontario in the final.

Stags and Rams started in the Day 4 Battle of BC. The Islanders needed a win to get a spot in the playoffs, but, after a very even game and a 1-1 tie until the 4th quarter, the Rams managed to score three times in the final period and win by 4-1.

The BC Rams will now play Ontario West in the semifinals. The Stags played again later in the day in the crossover against Ontario East and put on a show, winning by 8-0. Now, they will fight for the 5th place of the Nationals against Alberta, this Saturday.

And last but not least, the BC Lions won their game against PEI by 7-0 and ended as leaders of Pool B with 9 points in 9 possible. In the semifinals, they will clash with Ontario Central. Will we have another BC Battle in the grand final? Hopefully.

U15 Nationals 2019, Day 3 Recap

Day 3 of the U15 Nationals in Calgary, Alberta, was pretty good for Team BC. Every team from British Columbia have won their matches before the 4th and decisive day for the girls’ pools; the boys are very close to first place in theirs.

The event started out pretty good for BC as the U15 boys went into the pitch to face Quebec and got out with a 2-0 win. That is their second win in the tournament; they will face Alberta this Friday and, with a win, they will go to playoffs as leaders of the round robin.

Among the girls, the BC Stags opened up the day versus Alberta in the morning, winning by 4-0. In the afternoon, it was time for the Lions to face Ontario West and get the three points with 1-0 victory. Later on, the Rams beat Ontario Central 2-1.

With those results, the Rams lead the Pool A, with Stags in third behind Ontario Central; the Lions are tied in points with Ontario West on Pool B, but the BC girls still have another game against PEI to finish the group stage.

After all the games were over, all the teams in the U15 Nationals came together for an amazing banquet in the evening. Delicious!

U15 Nationals 2019, Day 1 & 2 Recap

The first couple days of the Field Hockey Canada U15 National Championships in Calgary, Alberta, saw some pretty great performances by BC’s boys and girls.

While none of the British Columbia Provincial teams played on July 23, the BC Rams girls opened up Day 2 with an amazing 8-0 win over Alberta on Pool A. Also part of this pool, the BC Stags had a tough match versus Ontario Central and ended up losing 2-1.

On Pool B, the BC Lions debuted against Ontario East, beating their rivals by 6-0. Ontario West leads the pool, with two wins in two matches.

Day 3 will have the Lions facing Ontario West in a decisive match to reach first place in their pool; the Rams duking it out versus Ontario Central, another serious contender; and the Stags will seek their first win when playing Alberta.

As for the BC boys, they beat Ontario 2-1 on their first game in the tournament and will meet Quebec this Thursday morning.

The opening ceremony of the U15 Nationals happened on Day 2. All the teams in the competition participated, with players entering the pitch carrying their flags and celebrating this moment along with the coaches, managers, officials and fans in the stands.

U15 Nationals start on July 23

The Field Hockey Canada U15 National Championships start this Tuesday, July 23, in Calgary, Alberta. Our boys and girls from Team BC have been training hard to represent our province against opponents from Alberta, Quebec, Ontario and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia will have three teams in the Girls’ National – BC Rams, BC Lions and BC Stags – and one team playing in the Boys’ pool.

U18 Nationals 2019, Tournament Recap

Team BC finished the Field Hockey Canada U18 Nationals in the best way possible, earning gold and silver medals in the women’s championship and another gold with the men.

With three men teams taking part in the in the U18 Nationals – BC, Quebec and Alberta –, every province had to face each other three times. In the end, whoever had more points would be champion.

The BC boys had a perfect tournament. They won every match in the competition, earning all of the 18 possible points and summing up a 42 goal difference. Nicolas Cain and Devan Crawford finished as the best scorers, with seven goals each.

In the women U18s, Team BC was well represented by the BC Rams, BC Lions and BC Stags. With Quebec, PEI, Alberta, Ontario East, Ontario West and Ontario Central also in it, this was a very balanced competition.

The BC Rams ended up as leaders of the Pool A, moving into the playoffs, while the Lions finished third, behind Ontario Central, and played the consolation pool. In Pool B, the Stags were first, followed by Ontario West.

In the semifinals, both Stags and Rams won their matches against the Ontario teams and ended up clashing for the gold medal. The final was very exciting, with the Stags getting a 1-0 lead in the first half.

The second part of the game had the Rams trying everything to equalize and the Vancouver Island team holding on to the advantage however they could. In the end, no changes on the scoreboard and a deserved gold medal to the Stags.

The BC Lions, despite not making it to the semifinals, also showed their strength in the consolation pool, winning all four matches versus Ontario East, Alberta, PEI and Quebec, finishing 5th in the competition.

Allison Kuzyk and Gabrielle Lee were the top scorers of the competition, both with 8 goals each.

U18 Nationals 2019, Day 4 Recap

The fourth day of the U18 Field Hockey Canada Nationals was excellent for Team BC. While the men practically secured the gold medal, in the women’s championship there is going to be a BC clash in the final between Rams and Stags.

BC Clash among women

In the first women’s semi final, the Rams were able to beat Ontario West by 4-1. It was a very balanced game despite the significant margin, and the BC girls celebrated a lot after the final whistle.

The BC Stags were facing Ontario Central in the other semi final and were able to open up the score in the first minute of the match. Through the rest of the encounter, they managed to control the game and finished with a 4-0 victory.

Rams and Stags will play at noon this Monday, July 8, for the gold medal.

In the consolation pool, the BC Lions have a pretty good lead with 9 points, five over the second place, Ontario East. Yesterday, the Lions beat Quebec by 7-0 and face Alberta to close the participation in the Nationals.

Boys’ perfect run

The BC U18 men are pretty close to a gold medal. In a pool with Quebec and Alberta – with each team playing each other three times – the team from BC have won all their four games so far and only need another win to guarantee first place and the title.

They will play twice this Monday, July 8, against Alberta and Quebec.

U18 Nationals 2019, Day 3 Recap

The third day of the U18 Nationals at the Tamanawis Park, in Surrey, ended with BC girls’ teams qualifying for the semifinal and the boys maintaining their winning streak.

All the BC teams won their games on Saturday. The Stags started out the day with a 7-0 over Quebec, and the Lions had the same score against Ontario East. In the afternoon, the Rams got the highest score in the competition so far by beating PEI 16-0.

With those results, Rams and Stags ended the round robin with a lead in their respective pools, and moved forward to the semifinal along with Ontario West and Ontario Central. The Lions will play another group stage against Quebec, Alberta, PEI and Ontario East to complete the standings.

BC Rams and Ontario West will meet for the first semifinal this Sunday, at 10:30 am. Lions and Ontario Central starts at 12:30 pm.

In the boys’ National, BC U18s maintained their amazing performance, winning their third game in three rounds. On Day 3, they beat Alberta by 10-0 and continue to lead their pool with 9 points.

U18 Nationals 2019, Day 2 Recap

Day 2 of the 2019 FHC U18 Nationals saw BC securing their second win among the boys, a clash between Lions and Rams’ girls, and the Stags beating Alberta.

The U18 Men’s National had two matches on the second day of the tournament. Both BC and Quebec faced and won against Alberta. The boys from British Columbia scored 11 goals without suffering any, and now lead their pool with 6 points after two rounds; Quebec has 3 and Alberta has 0.

In the girls’ championship, the BC Stags had a great 10-0 victory over Alberta in Pool B, which they too lead with 6 points.

Rams and Lions had a BC clash in Pool A; the Rams won by 4-0. Later in the afternoon, the BC Lions went on to face Prince Edward Island (PEI) and recovered themselves with good performance and 4-0 on the scoreboard.

After three rounds, the BC Rams are in first place in Pool A, with 7 points (2 victories and a draw) along with Ontario Central, leading because of a better goal difference. The Lions are third, with 3 points, followed by PEI and Ontario East, with 1 each.

U18 Nationals 2019, Day 1 Recap

The 2019 Field Hockey Canada U18 National Championships got started this Thursday at Tamanawis Park, in Surrey. Every Team BC in the competition had their first games on Day 1, with some great performances.

This first day of the U18 Women’s National was a true face-off between British Columbia and Ontario, with Quebec and Prince Edward Island only playing this Friday.

At 8:30 in the morning, the opening match of the tournament was between the girls from the BC Rams and Ontario Central, in Pool A. It was a very thigh game, and no one was able to get anything on the scoreboard, ending in 0-0.

The Rams went back on the pitch to close out the day, and what a game it was; 10-0 against Ontario East, with eight different players scoring.

Still in Pool A, the BC Lions were defeated by Ontario Central, 2-0. Playing in Pool B, the BC Stags girls had a great 3-1 win versus Ontario West.

There was only one game on this first day of the boys U18 National. BC played well against Quebec and managed to secure a 3-0 win. BC, Quebec and Alberta will play each other three times in the men’s pool, with whoever finishes in first place will get the gold medal.

U23 Nationals 2019, Tournament Recap

The U23 Nationals came to an end on Canada Day, and all the BC teams had notable performances, with Team BC securing gold medals among women and men.

Throughout the competition, the women’s BC Rams and Ontario developed a healthy rivalry, facing each other three times in total. After a 1-1 draw in their first encounter, Ontario beat the Rams on the last match of the round robin, when both teams were already qualified for the final. This sort of preview taught the BC ladies some lessons, and they applied them well in the end, beating Ontario 2-0 and getting that gold.

BC Lions came in third place and, despite getting no wins in such a tight tournament, they were all smiles in recognition of their great effort.

Battle of BC

The U23 Men’s National was decided between the BC Lions and BC Rams. While the Rams dominated the pool stage, earning 13 points out of 15 possible, the Lions confirmed the second place only in the final minute of their last game against Ontario.

This mix of relief and excitement was brought over to the last game. It was a very even encounter, with both teams leading the scoreboard at some point and, in the end, a 2-2 tie to be decided in a penalty shootout! It was tight, but the Lions won by 2-1 and were awarded the gold medal.

The U18 BC Rams also participated in the tournament and finished in 5th place by beating Alberta 5-4 in their last match. The boys will now get ready to play their division. The U18 Nationals start July 4 at Tamanawis Park, in Surrey.
