U23 Nationals 2019, Day 3 Recap

On Day 3 of the U23 Nationals, both U23 men’s teams from BC guaranteed a spot in the final; the boys from the U18 BC Rams had their first win; while the women from BC Rams will take on Ontario for the gold medal.

It was a hot sunny day of field hockey at Tamanawis Park, in Surrey, this Sunday. The third day of the U23 Nationals started pretty early, at 8:00 am, with the women BC Lions suffering a 6-0 loss to Ontario.

For the second women’s game of the day, the BC Lions and the BC Rams had to face not only each other, but also the scorching sun. Even though the Rams won by 7-0, both teams showed great effort and kept it going until the last second. The Rams also faced Ontario in the afternoon and lost 2-0. They will clash again tomorrow for the big final of U23 Women’s Nationals, at 6pm.

The men’s BC Rams won both of their matches, beating Ontario by 3-0 and Alberta by 8-1. With this result, they will end as leaders of the group stage and have secured a spot in the final.

The tensest match of the day, however, was between men’s BC Lions and Ontario. After losing to Quebec 2-0 in the morning, the Lions would have to win against Ontario to secure a second place in the standings – the two teams were separated by one point.

After ending the first half with a 4-1 loss, the BC team managed to clinch the victory in the last minute of the match, with a winning goal scored by Jarod Timmins. Now, BC Lions and BC Rams will dispute the gold medal this Monday, at 4 pm.

Other positive news for Team BC was the first win of the U18 BC Rams on the competition, overcoming Alberta by 3-2 in a very tough game. In the afternoon, the boys played Quebec in another solid performance, but lost 4-1.

U23 Nationals 2019, Day 2 Recap

The U23 Women’s National started this Saturday with two matches. The BC Rams had a great performance against the BC Lions, winning by 8-1, and tied 1-1 with Ontario. All three teams will play four games on this stage, with the best two reaching the final on Monday, July 1.

As for the second day of the U23 Men’s National, it opened with a clash between both BC Rams in the tournament, U23 and U18 – a good opportunity for the U18 boys to test their skills against older players. U23 won by 3-0 and beat Quebec later on, with a 4-0.

The BC Lions had a great win versus Alberta, putting a 10-5 on the scoreboard, and also overcame the U18 BC Rams by 3-0.

With two wins and a draw between them on Day 1, BC Lions and U23 BC Rams are leading the competition with 7 points each. Because of a better Goal Difference, the Lions sit currently in front.
